CASE STUDY

Bespoke drawer unit

The Challenge:

This is the second project that we have worked on for Ben and Aideen from Dormans Park. Following the completion of the sloped ceiling bunk beds, our attention turned to the unusually shaped space on the other side of the room. This was a decent sized, half height alcove area that needed to be utilised. Upon Ben & Aideen’s request for ideas, we suggested a built in set of drawers that utilised the depth of the space but as opposed to a cupboard, the drawer designs would help avoid bumped heads when in use.

The Solution

As with most of our joinery items, the majority of this project was pre-fabricated in our workshop, which minimalises the amount of time on-site and disruption to Ben & Aideen’s home life.

After taking dimensions, it was agreed that the design would be a fusion of oak and matt white drawer fronts; to complement the oak bunk beds and the pre-existing oak floor, without overpowering the room.

An additional benefit of being able to construct the majority of our joinery items off-site within our workshop, is the ability to spray paint the units prior to install.  For most furniture items we produce, we utilise our spray gun to produce a smooth and professional finish.

As standard we fit all drawers with Blu Motion Soft Close runners as we believe these are the best on the market. After completing the construction and paint finish in our work shop, it was just one day on site at Ben & Aideen’s for install. Our chosen design of a full wood frame surround ensured that minimal extra cutting was required, meaning a clean and simple install was achieved.

Initially the design was for fully handleless drawers however, upon install it was agreed that the bottom oak drawers would benefit with the addition of handles. To ensure the new handles were both functional and in keeping with the design, we fabricated two bespoke handles out of oak.
